Nomads is proud to support Lyli House, a small Johannesburg safe house that takes in newborn babies abandoned with nowhere else to go.
Who they are
Lyli House is a non-profit organisation (registration pending) operating from the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg. It started in 2024 as a nursery in its founders’ own home, taking in newborns who would otherwise be left in fields, hospitals or worse. On average, around 12 babies are abandoned every day in South Africa.
As of June 2026, Lyli House has moved into a larger rented space where it can care for up to 6 babies at a time — each with a dedicated day and night carer, access to private medical care, and a stimulation programme to help them thrive. Every baby is on medical aid, and several have already gone on to be adopted into loving families.
Why it matters
Government and lottery funding for places of safety like this one is scarce and shrinking, and some of that support may disappear altogether in the next couple of years. Lyli House has been entirely self-funded by its two founders to date — covering rent, medical costs, immunisations and day-to-day care for every baby in their House. There is no budget for a salary for the founders themselves; every rand raised goes to the babies and the carers who look after them.

Baby S came to Lyli House at just 4 days old, after being removed from a mother who was still a child herself. After a tough start — including two and a half months of bronchitis — private medical care has her thriving, now a healthy 10-month-old with four teeth and, the carers say, the most beautiful smile in the house.

Baby L is the one boy in the house, lovingly handed over by his mother last year when she was unable to care for him. He’s due to become Lyli House’s first baby to move out to his own adoptive family, who have spent recent weeks bonding with him ahead of the move.
How to help
Lyli House welcomes direct donations — from “adopting a cot” to fully supporting a baby’s care — and is open to visits from donors by appointment.
